Community Outreach & Development

Community Outreach and Development is a major program component of the PRC facilitating broad-based networking and planning with communities and organizations to develop supports for families with young children, which have marginal access to community services.

The Ottawa Community Committee on Child Abuse (OCCCA)


The Ottawa Community Committee on Child Abuse (OCCCA) is a voluntary, interdisciplinary, interagency committee with the mandate to identify child abuse issues and concerns as well as provide leadership in initiating ways to address them. Parent Resource Centre participates in a wide range of committee functions including co-chair coordination, prevention, advocacy, and education.


Children Who Witness Domestic Violence


Children Who Witness Domestic Violence - a subcommittee of the Regional Coordinating Committee to End Violence Against Women (RCCEVAW) is a voluntary, interagency group which attempts to raise awareness and to advocate for the needs of child witnesses of domestic violence. Activities include the development of inter-agency protocols and up-to-date listings of community programs and resources. Presentations on the subject of children who witness violence are offered through various agency and community forums.


The Amethyst Parent-Child Support Program


The Amethyst Parent-Child Support Program offers support for women with young children who are in treatment for alcohol and/or drug addiction. Amethyst Women's Addiction Centre and Parent Resource Centre work in partnership to provide positive parenting workshops, play therapy and enriched playcare.


Access Committee


Access Committee is a voluntary and inter-agency group whose purpose is to improve the quality of health, social and education services to immigrants in the Ottawa area. The Parent-Child Subcommittee initiates, supports and advocates for the development of culturally sensitive programs and services in response to existing and emerging needs. Parent Resource Centre participates in the development of workshops for LINC Childcare Workers, a newsletter for LINC Childcare Workers - Childminding: the Challenge, and distribution of the facilitators' manual, Parenting a Culturally Diverse Society.


Family Conference Outreach Initiative


Family Conference Outreach Initiative offers parenting workshops throughout the year to families and community groups who may not readily access the annual Family Conference. The conference and the outreach workshops are sponsored by the YMCA-YWCA of Ottawa and the Parent Resource Centre.


Community Economic Development/Community Capacity Building Through Family Resource Programs: A National Initiative


Community Economic Development stategies mobilize resources for the purpose of empowering community members to create new and expanded businesses or specialized institutions and organizations. The ultimate aim is the creation jobs particularly for people who have difficulty entering the labour market.

 

The mission of the Ottawa CED Network is to lead and co-ordinate efforts to raise awareness about CED; improve access to information, services and resources for CED practitioners; and to foster linkages among CED enterprises and other partners. The objectives of the Network are to:

  • Facilitate the implementation of new CED initiatives in Ottawa
  • Facilitate capacity-building in CED initiatives
  • Increase communication and co-operation among CED organizations
  • Create a communication plan to increase public awareness of CED
  • Develop the capacity of CED organizations to access funding and resources
  • Identify and encourage individuals and organizations to take leadership roles in the development of CED in Ottawa
  • Ensure that the CED Network has the resources necessary to carry out its mandate.
